King Charles III and Queen Camilla Usher in New Era at Royal Ascot
The royal couple, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, attended the prestigious Royal Ascot event in their new roles, extending their well-wishes to the racegoers. The royal party, which included the Duke and Duchess of Wellington, the Princess Royal, and Camilla’s sister Annabel Elliot, waved to the enthusiastic crowds filling the grandstand on the first of five thrilling days of racing.
“In memory of the late Queen’s deep commitment to Royal Ascot, the Platinum Jubilee Stakes has been renamed the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.”
As the new custodians of the late monarch’s thoroughbreds, Charles and Camilla will be continuing her rich tradition, having entered a string of horses for the upcoming five days of racing. The official program featured the intertwined cyphers of the King and Queen, and in their joint foreword, they expressed their happiness in knowing that this historic race meeting “continues to be a key influence on the global racing and breeding industries.”
A photographic exhibition in the Grandstand will also celebrate the late Queen’s close association with Royal Ascot, including images of some of her 24 winners, which the royal couple hopes will “prompt many happy memories.”
In closing, Charles and Camilla wished “the very best of good fortune to all the owners, breeders, trainers, jockeys and hardworking stable staff with runners this week,” acknowledging that it is “a huge and rare achievement to have a runner at Royal Ascot” and expressing their hope that everyone enjoys the exceptional experience.
Royal Ascot, which commenced on Tuesday, June 20th, will run until Ladies’ Day on Friday, June 23rd. An estimated 300,000 people are expected to attend the prestigious event, including British and foreign royals, as well as celebrities.
